One plush keychain on a bag can look like a cute little detail.

But add a second or third, and it’s a different story. A big plush hangs next to a smaller one, with another character dangling beside them. Soon, you notice what’s hanging from the bag before you notice the bag itself.

So why do people keep adding more?

Because once there’s more than one, the way you pair them starts to matter.

Pick One, and You Start Thinking About What Goes Next to It

Picking one plush is simple.

“This one’s cute.”

But when you add a second one, another question comes up.

“What should I put next to this one?”

You might match similar colors, hang a smaller plush next to a bigger one, or mix different characters together. Some people who carry several plush keychains on the same bag even talk about the fun of mixing and matching them.

You start noticing which ones were picked to go together.

The bag stays the same, but take one plush off and swap in another, and the whole feel changes. It’s the same bag as yesterday, but somehow it looks a little different today.

In Korea, it’s called baekku.

Baek comes from the English word “bag,” and kku comes from kkumigi, “decorating.”

What’s interesting is that baekku is about decorating the bag, not just the keychain itself.

Buying the plush is only the start. Then comes deciding where to clip it, what to put next to it, and how you want the bag you already own to look.

Even one small plush can change the look of a plain black backpack. Add two or three, and the difference is much harder to miss.

Baekku is part of a broader Korean trend of decorating everyday things. You take something you already own and make it feel more like yours.

So even if two people buy the same bag, they don’t have to end up with the same-looking bag.

They may have bought it from the same place. What they hang on it is up to them.

Same Bag, Different Plushies—and They Say Something About You

The bags are the same, but they don’t look anything alike.

Some people choose cute animals. Others hang a character they’ve loved for years. Someone else might go for something a little strange.

One BTS fan bought the same black cat plush Suga had hanging from his bag. The fan said it didn’t make it obvious to everyone that they were a fan, but it was a well-known item among ARMY, which gave them a sense of belonging.

To most people, it’s just a black cat.

But a fan who knows the reference sees something else.

“Oh, they know too.”

It doesn’t need a big logo or an obvious message. A plush hanging from a bag can become a quiet little fan signal.

And in the End, You’re the One Who Sees It Every Day

By this point, keychains can start to seem like something meant for other people to see.

But when you carry the bag around, you’re also the one who keeps seeing the plush.

It’s there when you grab your bag in the morning, when you set it down by your desk, and all the way home.

You get to have a character you like close to you all day.

So a keychain can tell other people, “This is what I like,” while also letting you keep it right in front of you.

Popular characters keep changing.

Today it might be a bunny. Later, it could be a cat or some strange little character whose name you don’t even know.

But the fun of choosing what to put on your bag is still there.

The next time you’re in Korea and the plushies catch your eye before the bag does, you probably won’t just think, “That’s a lot of keychains.”

Maybe you’ll wonder why those two were put together, why that particular plush was chosen, or whether someone else would recognize what that little character means.

And then you might look down at your own bag.
